Bucket List
I’m getting to the age where I’m starting to consider (seriously and realistically) a bucket list. I shared, in an earlier devotion, how I’d really like to drive a semi down a crowded street and plow through the parked cars. That, unfortunately, won’t make the cut of either a serious or realistic bucket list item, though.
However, one of my desires is being filled today. My previous bucket list included flying and only taking a portfolio. It sounds minor, but I’ve flown many times for work or leisure, and I’ve always had a checked or carry-on bag and a backpack. As I have walked through various airports, I’ve noticed business travelers with only a portfolio and yearned to get on a plane without worrying about overhead space or space under the seat.
The negative aspect of my current-day flight is that it left Kansas City at 5:30 a.m. Wanting to be in the airport an hour before my flight meant I had to get off the shuttle bus at 4:30 a.m. I assumed a half hour for the shuttle bus to get me to the airport from my parking spot, which meant I had to arrive at the parking spot at 4 a.m. I assumed an hour to drive from home to the parking spot, so that meant I needed to leave the house by 3 a.m. To shower and get ready, I assumed an hour, which meant my alarm went off at 2 a.m.
I planned to go to sleep around 7 p.m., but we had a storm last night and watching the weather guy get so excited about it delayed that until almost 9 p.m. So, I’m definitely a little sleep deprived.
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.” - Romans 8:28-30 ESV
“The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips. The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.” - Psalm 16:4-6
It’s wonderful that I get to check an item off my bucket list. More amazing is that God made us to understand and plan for those types of things. But even more important is to realize that God has a sovereign plan and timeline. Whether my plans worked out or not, I knew God was in control and I praise him that I can participate in his grand plan.
