Interstellar
Have you ever noticed something that most people would overlook and then be fixated on it every subsequent time you see it? That seems to be happening to me more as I get older. At first, it irritated me because I couldn’t see beyond it to the big picture story. Let me give you a couple of examples.
The first example is from the movie “Interstellar”. The gist of the movie is that it is some near future date when it becomes harder to feed the people due to the earth being able to produce less. The “scientists” look to save humanity by finding a new earth to move to. They find a few planets that appear inhabitable accessible via a wormhole.
Our son, who is a scientist, was excited when the movie came out because they had, more accurately than most movies, used Einstein’s theory of relativity to incorporate the problems of being near a black hole, namely time distortion. He hyped the movie to me when he asked if I’d like to go to it. I rarely go to movies in the theater but to go with him, I agreed. However, because of his hype I was paying close attention to the science as much (if not more) than the story.
To be fair, the movie did explain the time problems with black holes better than most movies but there were other science holes they glossed over. For example, it took a three-stage rocket to escape Earth’s gravity but one of the potential planets had a gravity just over Earths and was overcome using a shuttle type ship. After we saw the movie, my son asked me what I thought and I explained my observations. I could tell I perturbed him. He truly focused on the story and not all the details.
My second example is even more bizarre. There is a commercial for a GLP-1 drug that shows 4 or 5 main characters explaining why they decided to take it and then converging in a parade of sorts down the town. One of the characters is wearing a sweater over her dress top. In the first scene, it naturally drapes around her chest. However, in the parade scenes, it is affixed in such a way that her gait doesn’t cause it to move. I pointed this out to my wife and her response was “who cares”. Of course, she is right.
The problem is that I can’t unsee this discrepancy. Ever time I see this commercial (and it comes on a lot), I’m trying to figure out whether the sweater is affixed to her dress with tape or a safety pin or some other attachment mechanism.
“Since much time had passed, and the voyage was now dangerous because even the Fast was already over, Paul advised them, saying, “Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.” But the centurion paid more attention to the pilot and to the owner of the ship than to what Paul said.” - Acts 27:9-11 ESV
“Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” - James 1:19-27
I believe God wants us to be at peace with loving him, allowing us to notice and discern things that others may not be able to. A maturing in wisdom if you will.
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints.” - Proverbs 2:6-8
In case you’re thinking, like my wife, that I’m the only one who would notice such things, I did a google search and there is a whole group of people who are wondering about how and why the actress had here sweater attached to her dress top in the parade scenes. I may be strange but I’m not the only one. If you see a Wegovy commercial and now can’t unsee the difference, you’re welcome.
