Parking

I have mentioned that Parking Wars is a favorite rerun of mine. There was an episode featuring a towing company (Hawk Towing Company), in New Jersey, that had contracted with private parking lots to enforce their parking rules.  Hawk, the owner, has 5 boys with the oldest (at the time of taping) about 17 years old.  They - Hawk and little Hawk (I’m not making this up) - drove two tow trucks to this parking lot to tow off people who parked without the appropriate parking permit. There was a big sign that stated parking by permit only, violators will be towed. Guess they didn’t get the memo.

Because this was a reality show (reality shows like wrestling are scripted, right?), when the Hawks pulled up to check for permits, illegal parkers ran out to move their vehicles.  The first car hoisted was owned by a man who had a parking permit that he had not displayed.  Hawk eventually let him off.

The one vehicle they towed that trip was owned by a woman who was irate when she arrived at the tow lot and had to pay almost $200 to get it back (I believe the show was filmed almost 15 years ago so I shudder to think what the impound fee would be today).  She kept repeating over and over again that she’d been parking there for over 6 months and had never been towed.  Eventually, Hawk told her that she had just been lucky.  If anything, this only increased her irritation.  She eventually paid the impound fee and got her van back (but not before spouting off some expletives at Hawk).  Thus, ending that segment of the episode.

My quiet time this morning included reading Numbers when God was talking to Moses right before he died after climbing a mountain to only see the promised land from a distance.

“And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers. Then this people will rise and whore after the foreign gods among them in the land that they are entering, and they will forsake me and break my covenant that I have made with them. Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them and hide my face from them, and they will be devoured. And many evils and troubles will come upon them, so that they will say in that day, ‘Have not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us?’ And I will surely hide my face in that day because of all the evil that they have done, because they have turned to other gods. “Now therefore write this song and teach it to the people of Israel. Put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the people of Israel. For when I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to give to their fathers, and they have eaten and are full and grown fat, they will turn to other gods and serve them, and despise me and break my covenant.” - Deuteronomy 31:16-20 ESV

Here is a people who were rescued from slavery, saw miracle after miracle, were provided for, and who saw the presence of God daily.  Yet God knew that they could not follow his ordinances. Why don’t people only park where they are supposed to?  The answer, of course, is our sinful nature.

The second part of my reading today gave me the hope that I claim for myself.

“Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” - Romans 5:9-11

We were reconciled to our Lord Jesus Christ not because of anything we’ve done (or haven’t done) but only by his grace and mercy and for his glory.  I praise God that Jesus loved me so much before the universe was created that he died for me so that I wouldn’t have to face the punishment of my sin by being separated from God.

The Song of Moses:

They stirred him to jealousy with strange gods; with abominations they provoked him to anger. They sacrificed to demons that were no gods, to gods they had never known, to new gods that had come recently, whom your fathers had never dreaded. You were unmindful of the Rock that bore you, and you forgot the God who gave you birth. “The Lord saw it and spurned them, because of the provocation of his sons and his daughters. And he said, ‘I will hide my face from them; I will see what their end will be, for they are a perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness. They have made me jealous with what is no god; they have provoked me to anger with their idols. So I will make them jealous with those who are no people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh— with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the long-haired heads of the enemy.’ “Rejoice with him, O heavens; bow down to him, all gods, for he avenges the blood of his children and takes vengeance on his adversaries. He repays those who hate him and cleanses his people’s land.” - Deuteronomy 32:1-43
