Whee
When our son was born, we lived in the same rural area as my parents. That meant that once we exited the highway leaving town, there was 2 1/2 miles of a rural road, that was a little more than single lane in width. On this road, there was a couple of sudden dips.
We both worked so we juggled who took our son to daycare and who picked him up. I’m sure all you parents will recognize that when you are transporting your young child, you try to find things to distract them from some behavior or request that you just can’t attend to while driving.
So, when we got to those dips, we would exclaim…
“Ready, one, two, three, Wheee!”
Then we’d all exclaim…
“Do it again, do it again!”
By this time, we would be at the second dip. There was a popular song at that time “Tell me Lies” (by Fleetwood Mac), that we rephrased the chorus to “Tummy Time, tummy, tummy time,” to emphasize the tummy tickler of barreling through those dips.
When we first came up with this routine it was a way to distract our young son from an otherwise boring ride in his car seat. As we repeated the routine, it became as special to us as parents as it was to him as our son. It was something we shared together that no one else had; It was our thing.
“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.” - Psalm 127:3-5 ESV
“Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, but Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.’ And he laid his hands on them and went away.” - Matthew 19:13-15
It doesn’t matter if we are talking about our own children or being a child of God, it is a special relationship that can’t be duplicated anywhere else. At my age, I would give up a lot to go back and have “Wheee” time with our son again.
I can’t wait to have that time with Jesus in heaven.
